Varun Chakravarthy, the Kings XI Punjab 'mystery' spinner who was bought for INR 8.4 crore, found the going tough in his debut IPL match as he conceded 25 runs in his first over, with Kolkata Knight Riders’ opener Sunil Narine smacking him for three sixes and a four. It was the worst debut over in IPL history.
Chakravarthy ended with 1/35 in three overs.
Here’s what happened in his first two overs:
1.1 Varun to Chris Lynn. The Australian hits the full-length delivery to mid-wicket for a single.
1.2 Varun to Narine, SIX. Narine takes his front foot out of the away and smacks it over long-off.
1.3 Varun to Narine, 2 runs. Narine hits the ball straight towards the bowler who fails to gather it.
1.4 Varun to Narine, FOUR. Length is short and Narine pulls it through mid-wicket.
1.5 Varun to Narine, SIX. Narine gets down on one knee and thumps it over deep mid-wicket.
1.6 Varun to Narine, SIX. Narine welcomes Varun to IPL in the most ruthless manner, smashing him for another six.
6.1 Varun to Robin Uthappa, FOUR. Short and wide and the former India opener slaps it through backward point.
6.2 Varun to Uthappa, no run.
6.3 Varun to Uthappa, FOUR. Short and wide again, Uthappa rocks back and plays the cut shot past backward point.
6.4 Varun to Uthappa, 1 run. Tossed up delivery and Uthappa works it to long-off.
6.5 Varun to Nitish Rana, no run.
6.6 Varun to Rana, no run.
Varun bounced back in his third over, giving away just one run and scalping Rana (63).
