Sunil Narine provided the quick start, Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana built the platform for a big score and Andre Russell finished off Kolkata Knight Riders’ innings in style, smacking five sixes and three fours in a 17-ball 48. A target of 219 was always going to be tough and the early departure of openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul hurt Kings XI Punjab’s chances. Mayank Agarwal made a half-century but David Miller, who also hit a half-century, was asked to do too much in the end as the Kings XI lost by 28 runs at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday (March 27).
Here’s a look at the statistical highlights -
--> Collectively, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab hit 24 maximums - the most during an IPL game at the Eden Gardens. Previous best was 20 sixes, smashed during the match between the Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) last year.
--> 218/4 is the highest total in an IPL game at the Eden Gardens. Previously, Mumbai Indians’ total of 210/6 against Kolkata Knight Riders was the best at the venue.
--> KKR have now won 16 matches against Kings XI Punjab in IPL.
--> Debutant Varun Chakravarthy, who was the joint costliest player in last year’s auction (Chakaravarthy and Rajasthan Royals’ Jaydev Unadkat earned biggest bids of INR 8.4 crores), conceded 25 runs in his first over - the worst debut over in IPL history.
--> Mayank Agarwal reached 1000 IPL runs in 61 innings, the second slowest in terms of innings after Irfan Pathan, who took 66 innings for the same.
